Abriel Dixon

Sure you know the state motto of Iowa, "Our Liberties We Prize and Our Rights We Will Maintain" (okay, maybe you didn't know that), but what do you really know about this great Midwest state? Abriel Dixon, a native Iowan, was kind enough to answer all of our questions related to corn and everything else Iowa-related.

Q: What's the best thing about living in Iowa?

AD: Everyone is so nice! Just driving around, you'll receive the obligatory wave, even if you have no clue who the person is!

Q: And what's the worst thing about living in Iowa?

AD: Definitely a lack of restaurant and entertainment options. Our dining choices in the town where I grew up consisted of Quilt Country Family Restaurant (yes I went there for a first date), Granny's Place, Barth Dairy Cup (only open in the summer), Pizza Hut, Pizza Shack (won "Best Pizza in Iowa-1981"), and Subway.

Q: Being raised in Iowa, did you grow up loving corn or despising it?

AD: Love corn. If my family were farmers and I had to actually work with corn, I'd probably hate it. Instead, I got all the benefits of fresh, yummy corn, with none of the work.

Q: What are the best tourist attractions to visit in Iowa?

AD: Adventure Land is a summer-time must. I can still hear their commercial "Come on over to Adventure Land. You're gonna have a fun-filled day!" Effigy Mounds National Monument is really cool. The Iowa State Fair is probably the best thing ever, especially the yearly tribute to something famous--carved out of butter.

Q: What are you most proud of in regards to your home state?

AD: Every rest area in Iowa has free Wi-Fi. Talk about forward-thinking!

Q: With Iowa growing corn, and Nebraska full of cornhuskers, is there an intense rivalry between the two states? And, more importantly, are scarecrows actually used to scare Nebraskans away?

AD: Is it even considered a rivalry when Iowa is clearly better? I think not.

Q: What's the biggest myth about Iowa that you would like to dispel?

AD: That whole "Idiots Out Wandering Around" thing. It was just started by the "Show-Me-How-To-Drive" Missourians. Iowa freakin' rocks and don't let anyone tell you differently.

Q: With the many famous people that have originated from Iowa (including Tom Arnold, Johnny Carson, Ashton Kutcher, Kurt Warner, and Shawn Johnson, to name a few) who is Iowa's favorite son (or daughter)?

AD: I'd like to think it's me, but I don't think I've made enough of a name for myself yet. In Arizona circles, I think Kurt Warner would be the favorite.

Q: We end all interviews with word association, so I say "wombat" and you say...

AD: Cuddly.
