Interview with Five High's Guitarist Kevin Redlich Print

Kevin Redlich is the lead guitarist in the rock band Five High and recently took some time away from working on the band's new album to answer our questions. To listen to music by Five High be sure to check out their MySpace page at MySpace.com/FiveHighBand.

Q: Who are your musical influences?

KR: Jimi Hendrix, Dave Matthews, Miles Davis, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Zepp, Rolling Stones, and lots of 90's rock.

Q: At what age did you start playing guitar?

KR: 10

Q: How did the band Five High come about, and where did the name come from?

KR: Well, Nick and Josh had previously been in a band together called On the Spot. When a few members left, they found my ad on Craigslist, and asked me to play guitar and Josh's brother, James, to play bass. A year later we changed the name to Five High, because we were always told we were 5DB above sound limits.

Q: Which of your band's songs is your favorite to perform?

KR: Tough question; probably between "Broken" and a new one we have called "Bring Me Back." We also do a killer rendition of Bill Withers song "Aint No Sunshine."

Q: What's your secret to maintaining a good performance when the crowd isn't providing much energy?

KR: Play like my life depends on it. It forces you to push your boundaries.

Q: We hear that Five High is working on a new album, when can fans expect to hear it?

KR: Soon, not givin' anything away just yet. All I can say is that we are in pre-production.

Q: Do you have a special pre-show routine to get yourself ready for a show?

KR: Well, I do some warm-ups and finger exercises on the guitar. I do major and minor scales in 3rd intervals. Other than that, every show is different - different songs, different crowd and different energies, so I don't want to get into too many routines.

Q: When you're not performing with Five High, what else do you enjoy doing?

KR: What anyone else enjoys: hanging out with friends, traveling, getting into a little bit of trouble.

Q: If you could jam with any guitarist, who would it be?

KR: Might sound cheesy, but that would have to be Nick (the singer and rhythm guitarist for Five High). Everyone in this band has great musical chemistry with each other. He makes me play like no one else can.

As far as legendary guitar players go, it's a tie between Robert Johnson and Grant Green (look him up... amazing!).

Q: We end all interviews with word association, so I say "wombat" and you say...

KR: "Sphincter says what?"
