In Sarah Jessica Parker's latest film she tosses aside Sex and the City and goes for working-class mother. The title of the film says it all, how does she do it? Her character, Kate, juggles being a mother, a wife, and a somewhat successful career woman. As in real life, she quickly discovers that having more success with her career means that she will have less success at home. During the film we see Kate briefly juggle her joys in life (family and career) until everything falls apart in the middle of the film and her family leaves her (not the kids per se, but the husband). Pierce Brosnan's character also briefly makes a couple passes at her which flatters Kate (and most women watching the film), but ultimately Kate rejects him (she is a family girl after all). In the end, the film doesn't fall short because of its premise, if anything its premise is something that millions of people will be able to understand and relate to. As such, the movie while being promoted as a comedic drama (a dramedy, if you will), falls short because it does resemble too much of real life. By the end of the film we never really discover how she "does it" because, in fact, she can't do it all (as most of us find out in life, albeit in slightly more than the 2 hours that it takes her to in this movie). In that way, it falls the way of films like How Stella Got Her Groove Back, in which you never really believe that Stella got her groove back (if she ever did in the first place) and you just wish that you didn't have to admit to ever watching the film (not that I ever saw any movie with Stella... just sayin'). Fearless Prediction: Kate kisses Pierce Brosnan's character in the film, but she doesn't go further with the "hanky panky." Her husband also leaves her before she wins him back, and she quits her job at the end (to start her own business). Predictive Score: 2 out of 5 Opens: September 16th, 2011 Rating: Not Yet Rated Note: Predictive score is based upon how good we feel the movie will be. The Fearless Prediction is our prediction of what will happen in the movie, but not necessarily what will occur. |
