Wedding Ring

Call me old fashioned, but I still believe in certain moral values. And while I realize not everyone's views are the same, I'd have to believe, and hope, that society still shares some of them. That's why when I recently saw a commercial for AshleyMadison.com for the first time I couldn't believe what was being advertised. We've all seen dozens of different ads for date sites, or "erotic" chat lines, but none quite like Ashley Madison. In case you haven't seen their commercials, the site specializes in hook-ups for married people. In fact, their trademarked slogan is "Life is short. Have an affair."

Now, don't get me wrong, I realize that marriages aren't made of what they used to be. We've all heard the statistics on divorce rates, and it's abundantly clear that people find many excuses to cheat on their partner. And the fact that Ashley Madison boasts over 4 million members makes it very obvious that the site has no problem in finding plenty of customers with some sort of an excuse. But why? If your marriage is so unpleasant, then why keep up the facade? I realize that somewhere along the way "‘Til death do us part" lots its meaning, maybe partly due to the desire for instant gratification that society now demands. Whatever the reason, it's a shame that not only is a site like Ashley Madison around, but that it appears to be flourishing. Maybe marriages aren't built to last in the times we're in, but that doesn't make cheating any more right, or a site like Ashley Madison any less wrong.
